The 2013 iteration of the Central Iowa Lacrosse Association’s Summer Youth Lacrosse Program kicked off last Monday. Once again sponsored by the Walnut Creek YMCA, this year’s program is similar to the 2012 league with boys broken into two age groups of four teams each and girls participating together, regardless of age. Another Iowa College Adds Varsity Lax!
Lost somewhere in the shuffle this weekend, Cornell College in Mt. Vernon (fairly close to Iowa City) announced that they will add both men’s and women’s varsity lacrosse beginning with the 2014-15 season. The Rams currently field a men’s team in the MCLA. They participate as an associate member of the Great Rivers Lacrosse Conference (D2). Cornell is the second NCAA men’s team in Iowa and will be the fourth women’s team. Wartburg Adds Lacrosse
Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa recently announced the addition of women’s lacrosse as a varsity sport. The team will pay its first season in the spring of 2015. Wartburg is the third Iowa school to add women’s lacrosse at the NCAA D3 level. Fellow Iowa Intercollegiate Athletics Conference members Dubuque and Loras announced the addition of women’s lacrosse just over a year ago. Dubuque will field the state’s first NCAA men’s team beginning in the 2014 season.

After St Ambrose University in Davenport announced their decision to sponsor lacrosse beginning next season, I made a decision to take a look at the other nearby National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics schools with lacrosse programs. In Iowa that group currently includes St Ambrose, Cornell College in Mount Vernon, and Dordt College in Sioux Center. Dubuque Lacrosse Launches League
The Dubuque Lacrosse Association has been steadily growing the game in northeast Iowa over the last few years. In addition to hosting a free clinic this Saturday (January 19), the DBA recently announced the formation of a spring lacrosse league.
