Boston University to D1?

Inside Lacrosse is reporting that Boston University is strongly considering adding men’s lacrosse as an NCAA D1 sport.

“It’s absolutely on the table as a possibility,” athletic director Mike Lynch told IL Wednesday in response to rumors that the Terriers were considering the jump. “I would say that in the context of looking to broaden the stamp of our program any way we can, we see athletics as a way to do that and reach a national audience. There are a number of sports we’re currently considering, and men’s lacrosse is part of that conversation.”

Obviously this would be a strong move.  Harvard has been Beantown’s only varsity program since Boston College dropped lacrosse in 1999.  Rumors surrounding the Eagles’ return to varsity status have swirled for years, which may add extra weight the news of their crosstown rivals looking into the sport.  Of course the Terriers’ action will be independent of BC.
