Over the weekend, Zach Zielonko took a team of Des Moines area laxers to Omaha to compete in the 2011 edition of the Cornhusker State Games. The team borrowed the Aces uniforms & identity (plus a few players) from the Central Iowa Lacrosse Association’s 2011 Summer Lacrosse League team of the same name (ok, in truth we planned this from the get go). Among the clubs represented were Iowa, Iowa State, Drake, Augustana, Kansas State, Utah, Michigan Tech, Penn State (NCLL), and Valley High School.
Only three teams entered this year’s event at the men’s level: Lincoln, Omaha, and the Aces. The Lincoln and Omaha teams were essentially the Salt Creek Tiger Beetles and Rhinos from the Great Plains Lacrosse League, the competitive travel league for our area. Their rosters have been playing together all summer against the best laxers in the Great Plains area of the Midwest, while the Aces have been beating each other up every Wednesday night in West Des Moines.
It looks like our local league paid some dividends as the Aces defeated both teams in the opening round before winning the championship 9-7. With other regional tournaments already on the docket, the Des Moines Aces will hope to continue their success in the future.
