St Ambrose University Adds Lacrosse

Yet another Iowa college adds varsity lacrosse.
St. Ambrose University in Davenport will sponsor varsity lacrosse for men beginning with the 2014 season.  The Bees are member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, which does not sponsor lacrosse.  The school will apply for membership in the Great Rivers Lacrosse Conference of the Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association.  Other members of the conference include varsity club teams from the University of Iowa, Creighton University, the University of Nebraska, Missouri State University, Dordt College, Cornell College, and local opponents Palmer College.
St. Ambrose competes in the Midwest Collegiate Conference and Mid-States Football Association.  In-state rivals include Clarke University, AIB, Grand View University, Mount Mercy University, and William Penn University in the MCC and Waldorf College in the MSFA.

The NAIA is evaluating the potential of adding lacrosse as an “emerging sport.”  A growing number of NAIA schools sponsor varsity lacrosse programs through the MCLA.  A smaller number of NAIA schools offer club lacrosse programs through the MCLA.
